On August 8, 1945, the Soviet government declared that, true to its allied duty, it considered itself at war with Japan.
Marshal of the Soviet Union A. M. Vasilevsky was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet troops in the Far East. In the preparation and conduct of offensive operations took part: The Trans-Baikal Front (Commander Marshal R. Y. Malinovsky), the 1st Far Eastern Front (commander Marshal K. A. Meretskov), the 2nd Far Eastern Front (Commander Army General M. A. Purkaev).
The Pacific Fleet (commanded by Admiral I. S. Yumashev) and the Red Banner Amur Flotilla (commanded by Admiral N. V. Antonov) were involved in combat operations. Admiral N. G. Kuznetsov, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, coordinated the actions of the fleets among themselves and with the ground forces. Aviation was led by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal A. A. Novikov.
Together with the Soviet troops, the army of the Mongolian People's Republic operated under the leadership of Marshal Kh. Choibalsana. The shock group of the 1st Far Eastern Front was the 1st Red Banner Army (commanded by General A. P. Beloborodoe) and the 5th Army (commanded by General N. I. Krylov).
Many feats were performed by soldiers of the Armed Forces of the USSR during the defeat of the selected Kwantung Army. In 24 days, Northeastern China, North Korea, South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands were liberated from the invaders.
..On August 18, on Shumshu Island, the advancing sailors were hampered by fire from an enemy pillbox. Petty officer of the 1st article N. Vilkov, being wounded, rushed to the pillbox and closed the embrasure with his body. Nikolai Vilkov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The commander of the 113th Rifle Corps, General N. N. Oleshev, became a Hero of the Soviet Union for crossing the Bolshoy Khingan Ridge. Junior lieutenant, tankman I. A. Kalinin was killed on August 14 near the city of Mudanjiang (China). Permanently enlisted in the lists of a military unit. Their portraits are on marked envelopes of the USSR Ministry of Communications. Among the heroes of the Pacific Fleet, we remember the name of the nurse of the 355th Marine battalion M. Tsukanova. Maria was captured. Hero of the Soviet Union M. Tsukanova was tortured and died. Her name is permanently recorded in the personnel lists of the General Hospital of the Pacific Fleet. Among the pilots of the 38th Guards Aviation Regiment, P. I. Belyaev, a future Soviet cosmonaut, raided enemy positions.
On September 2, 1945, Japan surrendered. The Second World War is over.
