On July 28, the brilliant lexicographer-sinologist, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, modest, intelligent and in love with science Vladimir Sergeevich Kuzes passed away.

In the glorious cohort of Russian researchers of Chinese philology and history in the 60s-80s. B. C. Kuzes has always occupied a modest but notable place as an excellent lexicographer and an experienced interpreter of Chinese historical texts. He was born on December 9, 1923 in Moscow in a family of employees.

After graduating from high school in 1941, B. C. Kuzes entered the Military Institute of Foreign Languages as a student. But classes were interrupted due to the Great Patriotic War, and Vladimir Sergeevich was sent to the Trans-Baikal Military District, where he first served in the intelligence department of the headquarters of the 59th Separate Cavalry Division, and then in the intelligence department of the Guards 6th tank (later mechanized) army as an interpreter.

From August 9, 1945 to September 3, 1945, B. C. Kuzes participated in the liberation of Manchuria. For his participation in the amphibious operation against Japanese troops in Port Arthur, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

In 1946. Vladimir Sergeevich again finds himself among the students of the Military Institute of Foreign Languages, and at the end of the full course receives the qualification of a translator-referent in Chinese and a second-class translator in English. Since 1952, he has been a junior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Being one of the most qualified employees of the language sector, he is actively involved in the work of reprinting the Chinese-Russian dictionary (1st ed. in 1952). The dictionary was published in 1955 with appendices and indexes,

carefully compiled by B. C. Kuzes. His conscientious and meticulous work becomes an important criterion for high professionalism, as evidenced by repeated encouragement from the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences. To assess his knowledge of the Chinese language, as well as extraordinary hard work, one can judge, for example, the review of the famous sinologist I. M. Oshanin, who in 1958 wrote:: "Tov. Kuzes B. C. has a good command of Chinese (Bai-hua and Wenyan), [also] translates from English... Tov. Kuzes B.C. works well as a dictionary card maker. He treats his work thoughtfully and attentively." The work of B. C. Kuzes was highly appreciated by the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in 1959 he was given the opportunity to go to China on a scientific trip for three months, from which he returned with a solid baggage of collected materials.

Moving to the new and modern history of China, B. C. Kuzes developed an independent topic related to the history of secret societies in China and the problem of the formation of the Chinese Comprador bourgeoisie. Among his published articles on these issues, the most significant contribution to the study of the modern history of China was the monograph "The Shanghai Uprising of the Union of Small Swords 1852-1855 "published in 1980.The documentary basis of the book is perfectly presented in a lengthy appendix of documents translated into Russian for the first time mainly from Chinese. In the appendix, the researcher gave a hieroglyphic index of Chinese names mentioned in the book, which required careful study of the original sources.

Another important contribution of B. C. Kuzes to Russian Sinology should be considered his unusually active participation in the preparation for the publication of a large four-volume Chinese-Russian dictionary (1983-84), which was awarded the State Prize in 1986.

Continuing to engage in dictionary work and research on the history of Chinese society during the reign of the Manchu Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), B. C. Kuzes (Candidate of Historical Sciences since 1972) did a lot to advance Russian Sinology, leaving many good scientific works.

As a true scientist-enthusiast, Vladimir Sergeevich always helped everyone who came to him for advice or with a request related to his scientific competence or everyday experience. The scope of his good deeds was unusually wide: from the translation and corresponding registration of foreign educational diplomas for visiting scientists from China to the repair of foreign or domestic watches of his colleagues. Performing various public assignments that required special effort, B. C. Kuzes always remained a sought-after Sinologist-before and after retirement, especially by those who were not familiar with Chinese literacy, or with the Russian language, if they were Chinese citizens, whom he helped in any way he could. He was extremely attentive and friendly to everyone who addressed him with a particular question. Thus, B.C. Kuzes remained in the memory of many colleagues, colleagues and foreign scientists who learned with pain in their hearts about his unexpected death. B. C. Kuzes ' selfless service to Russian science is a great example to follow for both novice students and creative young people who have entered the path of learning the secrets of the very difficult language of the great Chinese people.
