The Prophet Elijah as a universal archetype
Heavenly Pilgrim in the East: Who Reminds Elijah in Hinduism, Buddhism, and ShintoismProphet Elijah is a unique figure even for the Abrahamic religions. He did not die but was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot; he brought fire down from heaven and closed the heavens for three and a half years; he fearlessly denounced kings and raised the dead. Of course, there are no direct copies: each culture melts the archetype into its traditional forms. But the more intently you look, the clearer the common pattern emerges — the heavenly thunderer, the wandering sage, the advocate of truth, who is not afraid to challenge both gods and people.Hinduism: Indra — the Thunderer, Lord of Rain, and Heavenly WarriorIn the Vedic pantheon, Indra occupies a position that strikingly resembles Elijah's position in popular Christianity. He fights with Vritra, the serpent holding back the waters, and liberates rivers — just as Elijah brings rain to the barren land. Both are associated with drought and rain: Indra can bring drought if he is angered and pour down a saving deluge if he is appeased. Both are fearsome and at the same time benevolent rulers of the heavenly ... Read more
